Meet Graca Machel only woman in history to be First Lady of two countries

Graca Machel only woman in history to be First Lady of two countries; Mozambique and South Africa

PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-Graca Machel is the only woman to be married to two presidents during their time in service. Why many will find this puzzling, it is infact true.

A product of University of Lisbon, Portugal, Machel returned to Mozambique and was appointed Minister of Education and Culture in 1975 (a position she held till 1989).

It was during her time in service that she married her first husband Samora Machel (first president of Mozambique).

Together they had two children: daughter Josina (born April 1976) and son Malengane (born December 1978). Samora Machel died in office in 1986 when his presidential aircraft crashed near the Mozambique-South Africa border.

Graça Machel Mandela married her second husband, Nelson Mandela, in Johannesburg on 18 July 1998, Mandela’s 80th birthday.

At the time, Mandela was serving as the first post-apartheid president of South Africa. Mandela died of pneumonia on 5 December 2013.

By her marriage to Nelson Mandela, she became the first woman to become First Lady of two different countries.

She kept the name Machel to honor her first husband, Samora Machel, who led Mozambique to independence from Portugal in 1975 and became its first president.
