Malawi Govt to rehabilitate infrastructure in all barracks

Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—Government has plans to rehabilitate staff houses, administration buildings and other structures in all the military bases in the country.

Speaking when she toured Moyale Barracks in Mzuzu and other army bases in the Northern Region, Deputy Minister of Defense, Jean Sendeza, said Ministry of Defense now plans to engage Ministry of Finance so that financial resources, for such a project, can be identified.

The Deputy Minister further affirmed that government is aware of the state of houses of soldiers and it will take care of their welfare by constructing better accommodation for them.

“I have been briefed on all the issues and after these visits, that’s when, at the Ministry of Defense, we will be meeting the Ministry of Finance so that they can help us with funds because challenges are just too numerous,” said Sendeza.

While echoing similar sentiments, Land Force Commander, Major General Elias Mpaso, said most army officers stay in dilapidated houses, a situation which risks them and comprises their commitment to duties.

Major General Mpaso said: “And looking at our challenges being universal in all units, she has assured us that something will be done and we have confidence that honourable minister will do something. Our challenges mostly range from accommodation to office space and social well being of our soldiers here.”

Most houses of low and middle ranked soldiers in the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) are too small to comfortably accommodate their relatively larger families
