Malawi Govt asked to come clearly on Covid-19’s risk allowance; Teachers threaten strike
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Concerned teachers drawn across the country on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 challenged Tonse government to come clearly on amount of risk allowance teachers will received when schools reopen next week
The teachers have however threatened to go on strike on September 7, when schools reopen if government will not come open on risk allowance.
This comes after teachers faulted government for delaying discussions surrounding risk allowances they have been demanding.
Addressing the news conference in the capital Lilongwe, concerned teachers’ leader Stafuel Chitukuka observes government delays in announcing the risks allowance shows lack of seriousness.
Chitukuta said that the grouping is complementing on what their mother body Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has been advancing.
He therefore threatened to go strike if government will not meet risk allowance demands.
“We want government to come out clear on how much teachers will get when resume work amid Covid-19 spike the way other civil servants including prison warders have been given.
“We will not resume duties unless government tells on exact amount of risk allowance will get,” threatens Chitukuta.
Teachers have over the last few weeks been pushing government to set up a special risk allowance when schools re-open amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, the teachers feel government is suffocating their demands as schools open in patch from September 7, 2020.
But Education Minister, Agness Nyalonje disclosed that consultations were still underway ahead of the much anticipated reopening.
However, secretary general for Teachers Union of Malawi Charles Kumchenga while acknowledging government’s commitment on the issue, said there is a delay in the process.
According to him until now, government has not notified them on when the next meeting will be held.
Kumchenga has since indicated that want the matter addressed before classes resume.
