Ben Phiri Resigns from the Post of Director of Elections with the DPP

Dr Ben Phiri has done a good job for the ruling DPP in the court

LILONGWE (MaraviPost): As the fallout from the loss of the court mandated elections continue, longtime aide and confidant to President Peter Mutharika Ben Phiri has relinquished his position as Director of Elections of the DPP

Ben Phiri said in his letter of resignation made available to the Maravi Post, As you are aware Madam Secretary General, at its Elective conference in 2018 the Party did not elect a Director of Elections but designated powers to the Party President to appoint who the right candidate would be.

It pleased the President at that material time to appoint me as Director of Elections for the Party, a challenge that I accepted with humility and responsibility.

I accepted the mandate with hopes of steering our political powerhouse to an electoral victory and nothing less. During my tenure of office as Director of Elections. the Party won the 2019 Elections which, unfortunately were nullified by the Constitutional Court which also ordered a Fresh Presidential Elections.

Personally, like all DPP members and followers, I had envisioned the DPP in power beyond 2019. Unfortunately, this was not the case, as the Party lost the fresh elections.

While we have the so many reasons to justify our loss of the fresh elections, the bottom line is that we lost the elections under my stewardship as Director of Elections.

Madam Secretary General. as Director of Elections I surely cannot claim to have any fresh and viable strategies to spur the party into another victory having lost the past one. I therefore deem it noble and civil for me to follow the tradition in the civilized and mature democracies where such

a loss would call for responsible office bearers to step down and pave way for fresh minds to take the party forward.

Furthermore, Madam following the loss, I have been accused of “selling the elections to the then opposition parties” for personal gains, an allegation I find very disturbing and defamatory.

It certainly questions my character and clearly the office requires trust from the bearer which for me has been lost.

Additionally, Madam Secretary General, prior to the Fresh Elections, the party made a resolution to safeguard our votes in the Central region just as how our friends from the then opposition did in the south. As events have turned out, the burden of it all has now been personally thrown to Hon. Nicholas Dausi and me to some extent.

I find this horrendous and deplorable. I beseech the Party to take full responsibility of its own resolutions otherwise the tendency may deter people

from executing their responsibilities for fear of shouldering responsibilities as if the party is their personal Estate.

Owing to the above issues. I am hereby resigning from the post of Party Director of Elections. This is not the mandate that I had signed up for. I was retained to steer the Party to an electoral victory.

Regrettably, I have failed my mandate. Madam Secretary General receive assurances of my continued loyalty and full support to the Party and the leadership as we embark on a drive to reclaim victory.

Be assured that I shall continue to serve as a DPP Party Member and Parliamentarian. I remain. Madam Secretary General, a loyal and humble servant of the party.

Hon Dr. Ben Phiri, MP -DIRECTOR OF ELECTIONS
