South Africa police shoot Journalist Mweli Masilela on face
MPUMALANGA-(MaraviPost)-South African reporter Mweli Masilela has been shot in the face by police while covering a story involving collision between taxi operators and police in KwaNyamazane in Mpumalanga on Monday June 29.
Reports revealed that Masilela was shot by rubber bullet few minutes after arriving in the area to cover the story while police officers were firing some shots in attempt to ensure order after taxi operators closed off a highway blocking roads leading to the township.
According to The Citizen news, taxi operators downed tools on Monday demanding that government reconsider its budget on the relief provided to the taxi sector.
Government imposed a 70% loading capacity to tax operators as one way of curbing the spread of coronavirus and several of them have protested against it claiming they’re not making the needed profit.
Commenting on the matter in a press briefing on Monday morning, June 29, 2020 , Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has urged operators to express their dissatisfaction proactively and not by challenging the law.
Mbalula added that the law will be maintained if the tax operators will continue challenging the authority of the state.
