So ‘genius’ Saulos Klaus Chilima was tricked?
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera, who is also the leader of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) which is leading an alliance of 9 political parties in the country, has made it clear that he will seek reelection in the next presidential election.
Chakwera made the remarks in a virtual interview with Voice of America Straight Talk Africa host Shaka Ssali on Thursday.
However, the president vowed not to seek third term as it is against the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.
“I will abide by what the Constitution says. There will be no third term or sad term for me,” said Chakwera adding that he will entertain any temptations to elongate his stay in power as “no one is indispensable, nobody stays forever.”
The Malawi Constitution allows a President to seek reelection after first five-year term but cannot seek a consecutive third term.
However, what Chakwera has told the international media is contrary to the terms of the Tonse Alliance in regards to presidential post if Saulos Chilima’s sentiments prior to the presidential election are anything to go by.
In the run-up to the June 23 presidential elections, Chilima of UTM party said he would succeed Chakwera after his term expires in 2025 despite having a constitutional right to run for another term.
Speaking at a rally at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre, Chilima assured his UTM followers that he would be the next presidential candidate for the alliance in 2025 in line with their rotational leadership.
At the same rally Chilima also said he would double as State vice president and Finance Minister but it did not materialize as Chakwera opted for his friend Felix Msuku.
Chilima assertions were, however, refuted by Chakwera during in an interview with the then Times Television maverick presenter Brian Banda.
Ironically, Brian Banda is now Chakwera’s spokesperson at the State House.
As events unfold, it is becoming clear that the Chakwera and Chilima entered into an alliance to achieve their immediate gratification at the expense of followers of their respective political parties’ followers.
It is either Reverend Lazarus Chakwera tricked the ‘genius’ Saulos Klaus Chilima in order to achieve his farfetched dream or Chilima might have deceived his followers who could otherwise go for the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as a second choice in their order of preference.
Meanwhile, MCP and UTM social media teams have been embroiled in a fierce battle for superiority in the Tonse Alliance after some UTM members made unfounded claims that Vice President the ruling MCP has been accorded VP convoy in order to diminish Chilima’s influence.
