Mtambo is wrong, Evangelical Association of Malawi can go to court for a ruling on Freedom of Speech on the billboard
The MCP led Tonse Alliance Government after facing a beating on social media is tucking tail and refusing to take responsibility for the actions of their hooligans.
we are now told the government is appealing to the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) to intervene in the standoff between the Evangelical Association of Malawi and the Islamic Information Bureau.
The question to be resolved is whether the words on the billboard go beyond freedom of speech. Only the Malawi courts can determine. If the courts say the words are so offensive and likely to cause or encourage harm to others only then can the people who put up the billboard have something to answer. At the moment it is their Freedom to support their beliefs the way they want.
This follows a request made by the EAM pushing for the removal of billboard that was erected by the Islamic Information Bureau.
The EAM deems the billboard as offensive to the Christian faith.
In a statement, the Minister of Civic Education and National Unity Timothy Mtambo calls on PAC to urgently intervene.
Mtambo says the quasi-religious group should initiate a dialogue meeting aimed to diffuse the tension between the two parties.
He assures that his office will render assistance, if required.
Mtambo who run to court for injunctions and even to challenge the powers of appointment by Former President Peter Mutharika, should allow Evangelical Association of Malawi and the Islamic Information Bureau to enjoy the same choices he had.
