Malawi Speaker Gotani Hara caught sleeping on duty; As fraudulent transactions mar Secretariat
By Nenenji Mlangeni
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Speaker of National Assembly Gotani Hara and his deputies have been caught sleeping on their duties following series of fraudulent transactions happening at the Parliament’s secretariat.
The Maravi Post understand that Parliament Secretariat is into malpractices without the knowledge of the current Speaker Gotani Hara.
For instance the secretariat bought a 1 litre bottle of spirit at MK45,000 (locally at MK300.00), a mare flash disk of 2G at MK47,000.00 (locally at MK3,000) and plastic masks at MK10,000.00 (locally at MK500.00).
Despite all the fraudulent transactions, payments of goods were done but no delivery of goods was made.
Now auditors are failing to consolidate the transactions on payments made to un delivered goods and services
Not only that the Secretariat is engaging the late Wales Khomeliwa’s company, Allied Enginneering Developments in supplying goods and services without the knowledge of the family.
“Late Khomeliwa died four years ago and he was the sole proprietor of the company. The family is equally shocked that someone is still using the company to supply goods.
“The family is the only people in possession of the late Khomeliwa’s death certificate and that if there was need to change the directorship of the company they could have been involved,” reveals inside the August House source.
Sources told The Maravi Post that fraud transactions at Parliament is happening without the blessings of the speaker.
The source assured this publication of exposing more fraudulent transactions at Malawi Parliament.
There was no immediate reaction from Parliament’s spokesperson Ian Mwenye on the fraud reports as we went to press.
Gotani Hara was entrusted with leadership at the August House in 2019 after tripartite elections to be the first female Speaker.
Parliament is expected to resume on budget session, September 2020.
