Malawi police in Kasungu worried over increased cases of suicide

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Kasungu Police has expressed concerns over increased cases of suicide in the district. About three people are reported to have committed suicide every week in the district on the grounds of deaths of loved ones, marital challenges and property grabbing and just last week, four people have terminated their lives.

According to Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Harry Namwaza, a latest case occurred last Sunday when a health surveillance assistant committed suicide at Nkhamenya.

Inspector Namwaza said the man, Dyson Kamwendo, killed himself right in his house. He has further bemoaned the tendency describing it as a retardation to national development and has called upon the citizenry to seek psychosocial support instead of terminating their lives.

Over 25 people are reported to have committed suicide in Kasungu alone since January this year.
