DPP’s Nankhumwa now leader of opposition in Malawi parley
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker for Mulanje Central Constituency, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has been named leader of opposition in the national assembly following the DPP’s defeat in the historic fresh presidential election held on Tuesday last week.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara made the announcement on Monday at New Parliament Building in Lilongwe where the members of parliament are continuing with their deliberations after taking a one-week break.
Nankhumwa has replaced Lobin Lowe whose party the Malawi Congress (MCP) won the Tuesday’s fresh Presidential elections and has since moved to the government side of the house.
The Speaker Gotani also announced that Richard Chimwendo Banda is a leader of the house, a position which was being held by Nankhumwa prior to the fresh presidential elections.
The today’s meeting was not short of drama as MCP legislators mocked DPP MPs following the change in sitting arrangements in the House.
At some point they sang in unison “odi mboma mo tilowemo ife (let us take over the leadership of the government).”
Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara is expected to guide on the business of the House.
